I am sorry but I know I have offended you a little when I say: “Ninety Percent
of Sierra Leoneans Lie”. But thanks to God, those of you reading this article are
part of the ten percent that do not lie.
BMT (Black Mans Time) has
ever since being the official time zone of Sierra Leone. No serious known
efforts have ever been done to switch to other time zones.
Probably, this is because ninety percent of the population prefer it. It is perfectly in line with their nature.
Probably, this is because ninety percent of the population prefer it. It is perfectly in line with their nature.
If you are visiting Sierra Leone for the first time or you are a JC ("Jus cam", referring to Sierra Leoneans just arriving back home),
you need a tremendous effort to get use to BMT. BMT is not standardized. As it
is now, BMT is very difficult to study. I’ve tried times without number to
figure out how this time works but to no avail. To some, BMT is thirty minutes ahead
of GMT, to others it is twenty minutes, or more hours ahead of GMT.
If ninety percent love BMT, let’s just standardize it for the sake of convenience. Let’s say, BMT is ten or twenty minutes ahead of GMT. Let’s have an agreement and then abide by it. Simple.
Ninety percent of Sierra Leoneans using BMT is a very serious cause for
concern. The percentage is so high that it keeps eating on the remaining ten
percent each and every day. This small ten percent finds it very hard to live
in a society with its own UNIQUE time zone. This ten percent, which is mainly
made up of under-fives , Westerners and JCs, find it very difficult to absorb well in the
society. Gradually, they too joined the band wagon, making their population never
growing.
Now, as you continue reading this article, accept this hard truth. If you
are using BMT, then you are part of the ninety percent. By nature, you are a liar.
Have you ever called a meeting and states that it will commence at 1 P.M and
you didn’t turn up until 2 P.M? Then you are simply part of the ninety percent.

Brethrens, if we want to join the rest of the world, if we want to follow
the same trend as others, can we please avoid the UNIQUE time zone? We can
either choose to join others or choose to remain UNIQUE, as UNIQUE as we are.
